William Fichtner's performance as a downtrodden drugged-up Mahone was particularly noteworthy. With the unlikely return of several other characters from the previous season, including T-Bag, Bellick, and former FBI agent Mahone, Prison Break fans were treated to several memorable character moments. He also spends a great deal of time with Scofield's former cellmate Sucre, who plays his part in helping Scofield escape as well. Lincoln spends much of the season negotiating with his son's captor, a Company hired gun named Gretchen. However, due to some brilliantly written tension-filled episodes, the effects of Sarah's loss were diminished significantly.
Rescuing Sara was one of Michael's prime motivations for breaking out of Sona, and Callies' departure from the series led to some controversial and unpopular last minute story changes. Unfortunately, Sarah Wayne Callies was unavailable to reprise her role as the sympathetic doctor, and had to be written off early in the season. This leads to a fairly complex series of circumstances that boiled down to requiring that Michael break an enigmatic inmate named Whistler out of Sona, in exchange for the life of his nephew and love interest, Doctor Tancredi. Scofield's motivation to escape was quite different in this season, with his brother Linc on the outside looking in. Under the administration of an inmate named Lechero, day to day life at Sona presented Scofield with a whole new set of challenges to overcome. One of the intriguing story concepts surrounding the Sona prison was the fact that it was run by the inmates themselves. The excitement around this harsh and unpredictable new prison setting for the third season didn't carry over and the set designers found a way to make Sona look like an overly bright and colorful schoolyard instead. At the end of the second season, Michael enters the gritty prison at night, which at the time felt like it would make the Fox River prison look like a playground.
Sona was the primary setting for the bulk of the episodes, and although it was certainly elaborate, the actual look and design of the prison was probably not the one the writers intended. Despite the loss of a cast member and the writers' strike, the shortened third season of Prison Break managed to overcome these challenges and actually tell an action-packed and intriguing story depicting the inevitable escape from the Panamanian prison called Sona.
